Wake Island is a V-shaped coral atoll in the central Pacific between Honolulu and Guam. The United States has maintained an airfield there since before World War II; the runway and limited facilities still support military transients and contingency operations thousands of miles from the nearest large city.

ARIA news and deployment lists include Wake among Pacific stops. As one Air Force account put it in a story preserved on flyARIA, there are no electronics shops waiting on Wake—crews and maintainers had to be self-sufficient minutes before a launch window. That sentence captures the deployment culture: the airplane and its people were the capability.

Wake’s place on the map is geometric. Sitting under mid-Pacific tracks, it offered a divert or staging option when ARIA aircraft needed to position for telemetry over open ocean between Hawaii and Asia.
